Everything you need to know about brushing your teeth!

Why do we need to brush our teeth, how long and in what way? Is there a rule for how often a toothbrush should be replaced? In this article, we will break down the A-Z of toothbrushing so that you too can keep a close eye on your dental health!

The main purpose of brushing your teeth is to clean your teeth from bacteria and prevent cavities. Therefore, it is important that you add fluoride to your toothbrushing. Fluoride is the substance that strengthens teeth by penetrating the tooth surface, especially where there are the beginnings of cavities. Gumpearls toothpaste tablets contain 1450 ppm fluoride and are therefore recommended by the Swedish Dental Association.

How do I brush my teeth in the best way?

It is important that each tooth is brushed on all surfaces, in order to successfully brush away the bacteria that have settled on the tooth surface. By brushing your teeth in the same order each time, you reduce the risk of missing a tooth.

You should brush your teeth twice a day, preferably after breakfast and just before going to bed. 2cm of toothpaste is recommended for children and adults over 6 years of age, to apply the right amount of fluoride. However, if you use Gumpearls toothpaste tablets, these are already portioned so that one tablet gives you the right amount of fluoride and toothpaste. Furthermore, you should brush for two minutes. In that time, you should have cleaned all your teeth.

It's time to replace your toothbrush when the bristles start to fray, as it loses its effectiveness. Alternatively, replace your toothbrush every three months to stay fresh.

What can I do to get strong and healthy teeth?

Your dental hygienist can help you with what you need to achieve good oral health, as we all have different starting points. But of course there are some basic principles that will help you along the way.

  • When you've finished brushing your teeth, take a small sip of water in your mouth and swish it between your teeth to provide additional fluoride in the places you may not have been able to reach with the toothpaste.

  • Do not eat or drink for at least 30 minutes after brushing your teeth. Ideally, you should wait 2 hours before eating or drinking.

  • Use aids for cleaning between teeth, such as dental floss, toothpicks and interdental brushes.

  • Use dental care products free of SLS and alcohol. This is because these substances dry out the gums and can cause more problems than good. You can read more about this here.

  • Eat at regular times so that your mouth has time to recover between meals.

If you want to do good for both your health and the planet, replace your traditional toothpaste with a more sustainable alternative. Gumpearl toothpaste tablets are free of palm oil, SLS, alcohol, animal products and microplastics, while containing the recommended amount of fluoride. In addition, Gumpearl stands for reduced plastic consumption and a greener footprint.
