Does toothpaste need to foam to be effective?

Many people find that toothpaste that foams or lathers has a better effect on tooth cleaning. In tests that have been done, participants say they experience a cleaner and fresher feeling from the toothpaste that foams. But the fact is that this is also the only reason why the foam is formed, it does not fulfill any function whatsoever for tooth cleaning itself.

What makes toothpaste foam?

Toothpaste, along with products such as shampoo, dish soap and the like, often contain Sodium lauryl sulfate also known as SLS. SLS changes the surface tension between two substances which in turn also creates the foam we often recognize in toothpaste, among other things. SLS can be called different things on the ingredients list, such as sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) or sodium lauryl sulfate (NaLS) in Swedish. These are often also found in so-called natural products, as SLS is often extracted from coconut or palm oil.

Effective teeth cleaning

The teeth do not become cleaner or healthier because the toothpaste foams or lathers. On the contrary, SLS can dry out the mucous membranes in the mouth, as SLS also contains alcohol. Dried out mucous membranes provide a pleasant environment for bacteria, which in turn can lead to inflammation of the gums and canker sores (aphthous stomatitis) .
